Description: Doctor Maria Bennett, her husband Henry Bennett, and their three sons Lucas, Thomas, and Simon embark on a Christmas vacation to Khao Lak, Thailand, in 2004. They arrive on Christmas Eve and settle into the luxurious Orchid Beach Resort. However, two days later, on Boxing Day, disaster strikes as the devastating 2004 tsunami engulfs the area.
Maria and Lucas manage to survive the turbulent waters and find each other, though Maria suffers severe injuries to her leg and chest. Together, they rescue a young boy named Daniel from the wreckage, and locals eventually take them to a hospital in Takua Pa. During the journey, Daniel becomes separated from them. At the hospital, Maria undergoes surgery for her injuries while Lucas assists other survivors in finding their families.
Meanwhile, Henry, Thomas, and Simon also survive and stay together. Henry leaves the boys with another family, who are evacuated to the mountains for safety. Determined to find Maria and Lucas, Henry searches the ruins of the resort but is injured and alone. A kind stranger offers him a ride to a nearby bus station, where he meets Karl, a European tourist separated from his family. Karl lends Henry his phone to contact Maria’s father in England, and together they vow to search for their loved ones.
While Maria is in surgery, a mix-up in medical records leads Lucas to believe she has died. Heartbroken, Lucas is taken to a shelter for unaccompanied children. The mistake is later corrected, and Lucas is reunited with Maria in the ICU. Meanwhile, Lucas discovers Daniel, who has also been reunited with his father.
The story highlights the family’s relentless determination to reunite amidst the chaos and devastation of one of history’s most catastrophic natural disasters.
