Description: The Hunger Games, released in 2012, is set in the nation of Panem, which is divided into 12 districts under the control of the Capitol. As a consequence of a past rebellion, each district must annually select two tributes—a boy and a girl aged 12 to 18—to compete in a deadly battle known as the Hunger Games, where only one participant survives.
The story follows 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen from District 12, who volunteers to take her younger sister Primrose’s place in the 74th Hunger Games. Alongside fellow tribute Peeta Mellark, Katniss is guided to the Capitol by their chaperone Effie Trinket and mentor Haymitch Abernathy, the sole surviving winner from District 12. Haymitch emphasizes the importance of gaining sponsors, as they can provide crucial aid during the Games.
During training, Katniss observes the Career tributes—volunteers from wealthier Districts 1 and 2 who have been preparing for the Games since childhood. In a televised interview, Peeta reveals his love for Katniss, which she initially interprets as a strategy to win sponsors but later discovers to be genuine.
As the Games begin, Katniss narrowly escapes death while gathering supplies from the Cornucopia. The initial clash claims the lives of half the tributes, leaving only 11 survivors, including the Career tributes. Katniss attempts to avoid the others, but the Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, manipulates the environment to force her into danger. She encounters the Careers, with whom Peeta appears to have allied, and seeks refuge in a tree. The next day, she meets Rue, a young tribute from District 11, who alerts her to a nest of genetically modified, venomous wasps.
The Hunger Games is a gripping tale of survival, strategy, and sacrifice.
