Description: “The House with a Clock in Its Walls” (2018) is a fantasy film set in 1955. The story follows ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt, who moves to New Zebedee, Michigan, to live with his uncle, Jonathan, after the tragic death of his parents. All Lewis has left of his family is a Magic 8-Ball and a photograph. Upon arriving at his new home, he meets Jonathan’s neighbor and close friend, Florence Zimmerman.
One night, Lewis hears a mysterious ticking sound coming from the walls. Curious, he explores the house and discovers Jonathan smashing a wall with an ax. Scared, Lewis runs away and encounters various household objects that seem to come to life. Jonathan then reveals that he is a warlock and Florence is a witch. He explains that the previous owners of the house, a sinister warlock named Isaac Izard and his wife Selena, had hidden a clock within the walls before their deaths. Isaac, a former friend of Jonathan’s, had been traumatized during World War II. Jonathan has been searching for the clock to uncover its purpose.
Despite Jonathan’s warnings, Lewis becomes determined to learn magic on his own. At his new school, he befriends Tarby Corrigan, who is running for class president. However, after Tarby wins the election, he distances himself from Lewis. Feeling lonely, Lewis turns to magic for solace. His mother visits him in a dream, encouraging him to use a forbidden spell to impress Tarby. On Halloween night, Lewis performs a necromancy spell in a cemetery, accidentally resurrecting Isaac Izard’s ghost, which takes over his dead body. The story unfolds as Lewis, Jonathan, and Florence work together to stop the sinister threat that emerges from this mistake.
