**Plot Summary:**
After the events of the previous film, Thorin and his companions are hunted by Azog and his Orc group. Gandalf leads them to the home of Beorn, a shape-shifter who can transform into a bear. During the night, Azog is called to Dol Guldur by the Necromancer, who orders him to prepare his forces for war. Azog then assigns his son, Bolg, to continue the pursuit of Thorin. The next day, Beorn guides the group to the edge of Mirkwood. Gandalf discovers an old ruin marked with Black Speech and receives a telepathic message from Galadriel, urging him to investigate the tombs of the Nazgûl. Warning the company to stay on the path, Gandalf departs.
As they enter the forest, the group loses their way and becomes trapped by giant spiders. Bilbo uses his invisibility ring to free the dwarves. After dropping the Ring, he begins to sense its dark power when he kills a creature to reclaim it. The remaining spiders are driven off by Wood-elves, led by Tauriel and Legolas, who capture the dwarves and bring Thorin before their king, Thranduil. Thorin accuses Thranduil of abandoning the dwarves after Smaug’s attack on Erebor 170 years earlier and is imprisoned. Bilbo, who avoided capture, arranges an escape using empty wine barrels sent downstream.
During their flight, Bolg and his Orcs ambush the group, wounding Kíli with a Morgul shaft. A three-way battle ensues as the dwarves fight off the Orcs and Wood-elves while navigating the river. Eventually, they manage to escape both groups. Thranduil closes off his kingdom after learning from an Orc captive that an evil force is gathering an army in the south. Tauriel decides to leave to help the dwarves, and Legolas follows her.
