Description: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” released in 2012, follows the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who, on the eve of his 111th birthday, recounts his adventure from 60 years earlier for his nephew, Frodo. Long before Bilbo’s involvement, the Dwarf king Thrór brought prosperity to his people under the Lonely Mountain, but their peace was shattered by the dragon Smaug. Smaug destroyed the nearby town of Dale, drove the Dwarves from their home, and seized their treasure. Thorin, Thrór’s grandson, witnessed King Thranduil and the Wood-elves abandoning his people, fueling his deep resentment toward Elves. In the Shire, Bilbo is persuaded by the wizard Gandalf to host a dinner for Thorin and his company of Dwarves. Gandalf’s goal is to enlist Bilbo as their “burglar” to aid in reclaiming the Lonely Mountain. Initially reluctant, Bilbo changes his mind and joins the quest after the company departs without him. Along the way, the group faces challenges, including being captured by Trolls, whom Bilbo cleverly delays until dawn, allowing Gandalf to turn them to stone. They discover treasure and Elven blades in the Trolls’ cave, with Thorin and Gandalf claiming Orcrist and Glamdring, respectively. Gandalf also gives Bilbo an Elven dagger. The wizard Radagast the Brown warns of the Necromancer’s dark influence at Dol Guldur. Pursued by Orcs, the company escapes to Rivendell and later finds themselves caught in a massive battle between Stone Giants in the Misty Mountains.”
