Description: The Hate U Give is a 2018 film that tells the story of Starr Carter, a 16-year-old girl who navigates life between her predominantly black neighborhood, Garden Heights, and her predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep. After a party in Garden Heights, Starr is driven home by her childhood friend, Khalil. During the drive, they are pulled over by a police officer for a minor traffic violation. The situation escalates when the officer perceives Khalil as a threat and shoots him, mistaking his hairbrush for a weapon. Khalil’s death becomes a national headline, and Starr, who witnessed the incident, struggles with the emotional and social repercussions.
As the sole witness, Starr must keep her identity hidden from her friends and boyfriend at school, which adds to her burden. She is pressured to maintain two separate personas—one for her neighborhood and one for her school—while grappling with the trauma of Khalil’s death. Encouraged by a civil rights lawyer, April Ofrah, Starr decides to speak out publicly about the incident, even testifying before a grand jury. However, her bravery puts her family at risk when she exposes the local gang, the King Lords, during a televised interview. This forces her family to seek safety with her uncle, Carlos, a police detective.
The film explores themes of identity, justice, and the impact of systemic racism, as Starr finds her voice in the fight for truth and equality.
