He explains the curse to Aubrey, and the two later return to the house to retrieve Kayako’s diary. However, Toshio drags Aubrey inside, cursing her. Eason takes the diary to an associate, who shares that Kayako’s mother was an itako—a medium who exorcised evil spirits and fed them to her daughter.
As the curse continues to claim lives, events unfold in 2006 when three schoolgirls—Allison Fleming, Vanessa Cassidy, and Miyuki Nazawa—dare to break into the Saeki house. Allison is locked in a closet and encounters a ghost resembling Kayako (later revealed to be Aubrey). Though they escape, Miyuki and Vanessa fall victim to the curse. Allison seeks help from her school counselor, Ms. Dale, who denies the curse’s existence, only to reveal that she herself is a ghost. Haunted by the spirits of her friends, Allison eventually flees back to Chicago to stay with her parents, but the curse’s grip tightens.
