Description: In 1999, elderly retiree Paul Edgecomb becomes emotional while watching the film *Top Hat* at a Louisiana assisted-living home. Concerned, his companion Elaine asks him what’s wrong. Paul explains that the movie reminded him of events he witnessed in 1935 when he worked as a correctional officer at Cold Mountain Penitentiary’s death row, known as “The Green Mile.”
In 1935, Paul oversees a team of officers, including Brutus Howell, Dean Stanton, Harry Terwilliger, and Percy Wetmore, under Chief Warden Hal Moores. John Coffey, a gentle yet imposing African-American man, is sentenced to death for the rape and murder of two white girls and joins other inmates on death row: Eduard “Del” Delacroix and Arlen Bitterbuck. Percy, the nephew of Louisiana’s First Lady, exhibits cruel behavior, particularly toward Del, even killing his pet mouse, Mr. Jingles.
When John seemingly heals Paul’s severe bladder infection and later resurrects Mr. Jingles, Paul realizes John possesses supernatural healing powers. This leads Paul to question John’s guilt in the crimes he was convicted of. Meanwhile, the arrival of the psychotic inmate “Wild Bill” Wharton causes chaos as he assaults guards and racially abuses John, forcing them to restrain him repeatedly.
Percy, in exchange for resigning and accepting a job at an insane asylum, is allowed to oversee Del’s execution. However, he deliberately sabotages the process, causing Del to die painfully. As punishment, Paul and other officers bind Percy and leave him in a padded cell overnight.
