**Storyline:**
In late 1942, after spending significant resources recapturing escaped Allied POWs, Nazi Germany moved their most determined prisoners to Stalag Luft III, a high-security camp overseen by Luftwaffe Colonel von Luger. The prisoners formed an escape committee, known as the “X” Organization, led by RAF Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett, also known as “Big X.” With approval from senior British officer Group Captain Ramsey, they devised a bold plan to tunnel out of the camp and free 250 men. Their goal was not just escape but to divert as many enemy troops and resources as possible to recapture them.
The prisoners divided into specialized teams to work on three tunnels named “Tom,” “Dick,” and “Harry.” American Flight Lieutenant Bob Hendley, “the scrounger,” acquired essential items, while Australian Flying Officer Sedgwick, “the manufacturer,” crafted tools like picks and air pumps. Flight Lieutenants Danny Velinski and William “Willie” Dickes, “the tunnel kings,” handled the digging. Flight Lieutenant Andy MacDonald, Bartlett’s second-in-command, gathered intelligence. Lieutenant Commander Eric Ashley-Pitt of the Royal Navy developed a method to discreetly dispose of soil from the tunnels. Other roles included Flight Lieutenant Griffith, “the tailor,” who created civilian clothing, and Flight Lieutenant Colin Blythe, “the forger,” who produced fake documents. Flight Lieutenant Dennis Cavendish led the choir to mask the noise of their operations.
In June 1943, Bartlett enlisted the help of USAAF Captain Virgil Hilts, known as “The Cooler King,” who was planning his own escape with Scottish RAF Flying Officer Archibald “Archie” Ives.
