In 1932, Zero is a newly hired lobby boy at the prestigious hotel, working under the meticulous concierge, Monsieur Gustave H. Gustave is known for charming wealthy elderly clients, including Madame D., an 84-year-old dowager with whom he shares a long-term affair. Shortly after her last visit to the hotel, Madame D. dies mysteriously. Gustave and Zero attend the reading of her will at her estate, Schloss Lutz, where they learn that she has bequeathed a priceless Renaissance painting, “Boy with Apple,” to Gustave. This decision infuriates her son, Dmitri, who accuses Gustave of murder and demands his arrest.
Falsely imprisoned, Gustave befriends a group of inmates and orchestrates an escape with the help of Zero and his girlfriend, Agatha, who smuggles digging tools inside pastries. After breaking free, Gustave and Zero work together to prove his innocence, aided by the Society of the Crossed Keys, a network of concierges. They discover a second will that would only take effect if Madame D. was murdered. However, their pursuit is fraught with danger as they are relentlessly pursued by J. G. Jopling, a ruthless assassin hired by Dmitri.
The film weaves a tale of intrigue, humor, and suspense as Gustave and Zero navigate a perilous journey to uncover the truth, escape their pursuers, and restore justice.
