Michael aims to acquire shares in Internazionale Immobiliare, a major real estate company, by offering $600 million to the Vatican Bank, which faces a massive deficit. He seeks to purchase the Vatican’s stake to gain controlling interest in the company. The board approves the offer, pending the Pope’s ratification. Meanwhile, Don Altobello, a New York Mafia boss, warns Michael that his associates want a share of the Immobiliare deal. Michael appeases them using proceeds from his Las Vegas assets, but Zasa, excluded from the deal, declares Michael his enemy and storms out. Shortly after, a helicopter attack during a meeting kills most of the bosses, but Michael, Vincent, and his bodyguard, Al Neri, escape. Michael realizes Altobello’s betrayal and suffers a diabetic stroke. While recovering, Vincent begins a romance with Mary. With Neri and Connie’s approval, Vincent retaliates by killing Zasa during a street festival. Michael reprimands Vincent, urging him to end his relationship with Mary to protect her from the dangers of the family’s criminal activities.
