**Storyline:**
In 1901, nine-year-old Vito Andolini’s family is murdered in Corleone, Sicily, after his father angers a local Mafia leader, Don Ciccio. Vito escapes to New York City, where he is registered as “Vito Corleone” at Ellis Island. By 1917, he settles in New York, marries, and starts a family. After losing his job due to interference from a local mob boss, Fanucci, Vito is drawn into a life of crime after joining a burglary orchestrated by his friend, Clemenza.
Vito and his wife have two more sons, Sonny and Michael. As Vito’s criminal activities grow, Fanucci begins extorting him. Although his partners suggest paying the mob boss, Vito devises a plan to eliminate him instead. During a local festival, Vito confronts and kills Fanucci, earning respect and influence in the community. His reputation grows, and he is sought after for assistance, such as helping a widow facing eviction.
Later, Vito returns to Sicily with his family for the first time since leaving. With his business partner, Tommasino, he visits Don Ciccio under the guise of seeking a blessing for their olive oil business. During the meeting, Vito reveals his true identity and takes revenge by killing Ciccio.
In the 1940s, the Corleone family gathers to celebrate Vito’s birthday. Michael shocks his family by announcing he has enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps following the attack on Pearl Harbor. While Sonny is furious and Tom is skeptical, only Fredo supports Michael’s decision. As Vito arrives home, the family rushes to greet him, leaving Michael alone in the dining room.
