Description: In Stockholm, disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist is dealing with the aftermath of a libel lawsuit filed by businessman Hans-Erik Wennerström, which has damaged his career and strained his relationship with his married business partner and lover, Erika Berger. Meanwhile, Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant but antisocial investigator and hacker, conducts a detailed background check on Blomkvist for wealthy Henrik Vanger. Vanger offers Blomkvist evidence against Wennerström in exchange for investigating the decades-old disappearance of his grandniece, 16-year-old Harriet. Vanger suspects Harriet was murdered, as he has been receiving framed pressed flowers each year, similar to the ones Harriet used to make for him before her disappearance, leading him to believe the killer is taunting him. Blomkvist agrees and moves to the Vanger family estate on Hedestad Island to begin his investigation.
Salander’s life takes a dark turn when her state-appointed guardian, Holger Palmgren, suffers a stroke and is replaced by Nils Bjurman, a cruel man who controls her finances and sexually abuses her. At one of their meetings, Bjurman assaults her, unaware that she has secretly recorded the encounter. Later, Salander takes revenge by tasering him, binding him, and tattooing “I’m a rapist pig” on his body. Using the recording as leverage, she blackmails him into granting her financial independence and cutting off all contact.
Blomkvist delves into the Vanger family history, discovering some members were Nazi sympathizers during World War II. He finds a list of names and numbers that his daughter, Pernilla, identifies as Bible verse references. Blomkvist learns that Salander had illegally researched him but decides to recruit her as his assistant. Salander uncovers a link between the list and a series of brutal murders of young women, many with Jewish names, suggesting the crimes were motivated by antisemitism. The investigation takes a sinister turn when Blomkvist finds his mutilated cat on his doorstep, signaling that the killer is watching him.
