In a dystopian near future, humanity is devastated by a fungal parasite transmitted through bodily fluids, transforming the infected into fast, mindless zombies known as “hungries.” The only hope for survival lies in a group of hybrid second-generation children who, despite their craving for living flesh, retain the ability to think and learn. These children are held captive by soldiers under the command of Sergeant Eddie Parks at a military base in the Home Counties.
Dr. Caroline Caldwell conducts experiments on the children, while Helen Justineau is tasked with educating and studying them. Among the group is an extraordinary girl named Melanie, with whom Helen forms a strong bond. When the base is overrun by hungries and the lab is breached, Melanie escapes into the chaos outside.
As the surviving group, including Helen, Caldwell, and soldiers Gallagher and Dillon, flees in a truck, Melanie is restrained to prevent her from attacking them. Their journey becomes perilous when hungries ambush them during a stop, resulting in Dillon’s death and the truck’s destruction.
The group continues on foot to London, where they navigate a mass of dormant hungries using a scent-masking “blocker” gel. They take refuge in an abandoned hospital, where Caldwell reveals that second-generation hungries were discovered after infected infants emerged from their mothers.
The next morning, the group finds themselves surrounded by hungries. As a second-generation hungry, Melanie is ignored by the swarm. She devours a stray cat and explores the area, eventually helping the group by luring the hungries away with a stray dog, allowing them to escape.
