Description: “The Girl on the Train” (2016) tells the story of Rachel Watson, portrayed by Emily Blunt, a woman struggling with alcoholism as she navigates the aftermath of losing her job and her marriage. Every day, she takes a train into New York City, fixating on the lives of her ex-husband, Tom, his new wife, Anna, and their neighbors, Scott and Megan Hipwell. Megan, who once worked as a nanny for Tom and Anna, had recently quit her job.
Rachel’s struggles with infertility during her marriage to Tom led her into depression and alcoholism, resulting in frequent blackouts and destructive behavior. During a barbecue hosted by Tom’s boss, Rachel’s drunken outburst caused Tom to lose his job. Now, in her inebriated state, she often harasses Tom and Anna, though she remembers little of it afterward.
One afternoon, Rachel becomes enraged when she sees Megan kissing a stranger. She confronts Megan but later wakes up in her own bed, covered in blood. When Megan goes missing, Rachel becomes a person of interest to Detective Riley, who questions her about being in the area that day. Rachel reaches out to Scott, posing as Megan’s friend, and informs him of Megan’s affair. Scott shows her a photo of Dr. Kamal Abdic, Megan’s psychiatrist, whom Rachel identifies as the man she saw with Megan. Abdic is questioned but reveals that Scott was emotionally abusive toward Megan, shifting suspicion to him.
Rachel meets with Dr. Abdic, believing he is connected to Megan’s disappearance, but instead discusses her own emotional struggles. Abdic shares that during a session, Megan revealed a traumatic past—she had a baby who accidentally drowned in the bathtub when she was very young, a tragedy for which she never forgave herself. The film delves into themes of memory, addiction, and the complexities of human relationships.
