Simon and Robyn Callem, a married couple, move from Chicago to a Los Angeles suburb after Simon starts a new job. During their relocation, they unexpectedly cross paths with Gordon “Gordo” Moseley, Simon’s former high school classmate. Gordo begins visiting uninvited, bringing gifts like bottles of wine and koi fish for their pond. While Simon feels uneasy about his presence, Robyn sees no harm in it.
One evening, Gordo invites the couple and another pair to his large home. Upon arrival, they are told the other couple canceled. Gordo leaves abruptly due to a work issue, leaving the Callems alone, which deepens Simon’s suspicion. When Gordo returns, Simon demands that he stay away from them.
The next day, Robyn discovers the koi fish dead and their dog missing. Simon confronts Gordo at his house, only to find that the property belongs to a different couple. Over the following days, Robyn becomes increasingly paranoid, noticing faucets left on and hearing unexplained footsteps. Struggling to sleep, she takes prescription pills.
That night, the dog suddenly reappears, and Robyn receives an apology letter from Gordo. The letter ends with a cryptic message to Simon, indicating that Gordo was once willing to let go of a past incident but no longer is. Simon claims not to understand the reference.
As time passes, Simon inquires about a promotion at work and learns his only competition is a colleague named Danny McDonald. Meanwhile, Robyn’s paranoia intensifies, leading her to faint. She wakes up the next morning to find Simon holding her stolen pills, revealing this was an issue for her back in Chicago.
Eventually, things stabilize, and Robyn becomes pregnant. However, one day while shopping, she spots Gordo watching her, reigniting her fears.
