**Storyline:**
Jim Bennett, a literature professor in Los Angeles, turns to gambling as a form of self-destruction. He finds himself in deep trouble after accumulating a debt of $200,000 to Lee, the owner of an exclusive underground gambling ring, and an additional $50,000 to Neville Baraka, a ruthless loan shark. Lee gives Jim seven days to repay his debts, threatening his life if he fails.
During one of his lectures, Jim engages in a discussion about literary excellence, using Shakespeare as an example. He argues that most aspiring writers fail to achieve greatness and singles out exceptional athletes in his class. First, he focuses on Dexter, a promising tennis player, and later confronts Lamar Allen, a basketball star who dreams of playing in the NBA. Jim shares his extreme belief that one must excel in their chosen field or not try at all. He tells the class that only Amy Phillips, a quiet but talented student, has the potential for a literary career. Based on her previous work, Jim recognizes her talent and later discovers she secretly works as a waitress at the underground gambling establishment. The two develop a mutual interest in each other.
After class, Jim visits his wealthy mother, Roberta, at her luxurious estate, seeking financial help. However, she refuses to give him more money. Desperate, Jim considers borrowing from another loan shark, Frank, but backs out when Frank demands that Jim admit, “I am not a man.” Eventually, Jim convinces Roberta to lend him enough money to settle his debts, showing no gratitude. However, he gambles it all away during a casino trip with Amy.
Baraka kidnaps Jim, tortures him, and presents an ultimatum: Jim must persuade Lamar to win his next college basketball game by a margin of 7 points or less. If he fails, Baraka threatens to kill Amy.
