Description: “The Fundamentals of Caring” is a 2016 movie that follows the story of Ben, an unemployed writer in Seattle, who is avoiding his estranged wife’s attempts to serve him with divorce papers. To start anew, Ben completes a six-week course to become a certified caregiver and is hired by Elsa, a bank manager from England, to care for her 18-year-old son, Trevor, who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Ben gradually adapts to Trevor’s daily routine and forms a bond with the sarcastic and sexually frustrated teenager. Trevor shares that his father left when he was diagnosed at age three and has been sending letters, which Trevor ignores. Elsa and Trevor are aware that Ben is grieving the loss of his own young son. Elsa warns Ben not to get too attached to Trevor, fearing he will be hurt when Ben eventually moves on.
Trevor has a passion for American roadside attractions, and Ben convinces Elsa to allow them to take a road trip. Together, they journey to visit the world’s deepest pit. Trevor also expresses a desire to see his father, who owns a car dealership in Salt Lake City. Along the way, they meet a hitchhiker named Dot, who Trevor develops feelings for. Ben invites Dot to join them on their trip after encountering her again at a diner. Dot reveals she is heading to Denver to start a new life. During their travels, they also assist a pregnant woman named Peaches, whose car has broken down.
As they continue their journey, Trevor asks Dot on a date, and she agrees. Upon reaching Salt Lake City, they confront Trevor’s father, who admits that Elsa had been writing the letters on his behalf. He shows no interest in reconnecting with Trevor and instead offers him money, which Trevor and his companions reject.
Tensions rise between Trevor and Ben, and they consider ending their trip. However, Dot insists they continue to their destination. Upon arriving at the world’s deepest pit, Trevor, Dot, and Peaches venture to the bottom while Ben stays behind, claiming he forgot his phone.
The film explores themes of loss, connection, and the complexities of human relationships through this heartfelt and humorous journey.
