**Storyline:**
Young d’Artagnan leaves his rural home in Gascony at his father’s urging and travels to Paris. There, he finds himself caught in a cunning scheme involving the King’s Musketeers and Cardinal Richelieu’s Guardsmen.
Richard Lester’s *The Four Musketeers* was filmed simultaneously with his 1974 hit *The Three Musketeers*, continuing the story with the same blend of complex plotting and endless swashbuckling action. While the first film was more enjoyable, the second feels like an overextension of the same formula, becoming tiring with its repetitive sword fights and romantic subplots.
This installment sees the original musketeers, along with their new recruit, d’Artagnan, entangled in intrigues involving Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu, and the French Revolution. The film bears little resemblance to historical events or Alexandre Dumas’ original novel, but that isn’t a problem as long as the audience is entertained. However, the lack of character development makes it hard to stay invested. Lester’s focus on stereotypes, fast-paced action, and relentless energy ultimately leaves viewers exhausted.
The plot is particularly difficult to follow, with its rapid succession of events, confrontations, and coincidences. After a while, it becomes a challenge just to keep track of the characters and their motivations.
Despite its flaws, *The Four Musketeers* offers a mix of adventure and chaos that may appeal to fans of action-packed period dramas.
