In 1937, Japan invades China, marking the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War. As the Japanese Imperial Army captures Nanking, the capital city, they carry out a brutal massacre. Amid the chaos, a group of terrified schoolgirls seeks shelter in a Western-run Roman Catholic cathedral. John Miller, an American mortician sent to bury the cathedral’s head priest, finds himself among the girls. He encounters George, an orphan boy raised by the priest and fluent in English. Soon after, a group of bold prostitutes arrives at the cathedral, hiding in the cellar. Miller pretends to be a priest, striving to protect everyone while attempting to repair the convent’s truck for escape.
After rogue Japanese soldiers attack the cathedral and are killed by a lone Chinese Major, Colonel Hasegawa vows to protect the convent by stationing guards outside. He requests the schoolgirls perform a chorale for him and later extends an official invitation for them to sing at the Japanese Army’s victory celebration. Miller, fearing for the girls’ safety, declines. However, Hasegawa insists it is an order and that the girls will be taken the next day. During a headcount, the Japanese soldiers mistakenly include one of the prostitutes, totaling 13 girls.
As the situation grows dire, Shu Juan, the schoolgirls’ leader, persuades her group to consider suicide by jumping from the cathedral tower. At the last moment, Yu Mo, the prostitutes’ leader, intervenes, convincing her group to replace the schoolgirls at the Japanese event. With only 12 prostitutes, George volunteers to join them, making the ultimate sacrifice to protect the innocent.
