Description: **The Florida Project (2017) – Synopsis**
Six-year-old Moonee lives with her young single mother, Halley, in the Magic Castle motel, located in Kissimmee, Florida, near Walt Disney World. During the summer, Moonee spends most of her days unsupervised, exploring with her friends Scooty and Dicky, who also reside at the motel. Together, they often get into mischief. Bobby, the motel’s manager, keeps a watchful eye on the children and looks out for them.
One day, after the kids are caught spitting on a guest’s car at Futureland, the neighboring motel, Dicky’s father bans him from playing with Moonee and Scooty for a week. While cleaning the car, they meet Stacy, the car’s owner, and her granddaughter Jancey, who quickly becomes friends with Moonee. Later, Dicky’s family moves to New Orleans, leaving the group saddened. Before leaving, Dicky’s father gives his son’s toys to Moonee and Scooty since they no longer have space in their car.
Moonee and Scooty also encounter a Brazilian tourist couple staying at the Magic Castle. The couple had intended to spend their honeymoon at Walt Disney World but ended up at the motel due to a booking mistake. As they argue, Moonee tells Scooty she always knows when adults are about to cry.
Meanwhile, Halley loses her job as an exotic dancer, which jeopardizes her eligibility for public assistance (TANF). She explains to the benefits officer that she was fired for refusing inappropriate advances from clients, but this is not considered a valid reason for her termination. Struggling to make ends meet, Halley starts selling perfume to tourists in parking lots. With the children on summer break, she also babysits Scooty during the day in exchange for meals provided by Scooty’s mother, Ashley, who works at a nearby diner.
The story unfolds as Moonee navigates her carefree yet challenging childhood, while Halley faces the harsh realities of poverty and single motherhood.
