The development of “The Flash” started as early as the late 1980s, with various writers and directors involved over the years. After being redeveloped for the DCEU, Ezra Miller was cast as the lead in 2014. The project faced numerous director changes due to creative differences, with Seth Grahame-Smith, Rick Famuyiwa, and the duo of John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein all leaving the film. Muschietti and Hodson joined in 2019, and pre-production began in 2020. Inspired by the 2011 comic storyline “Flashpoint,” the movie introduces other DC characters, such as Supergirl (played by Sasha Calle) and both Ben Affleck’s and Michael Keaton’s versions of Batman. Filming took place from April to October 2021 in the UK.
The film premiered on June 12, 2023, at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and was released in the U.S. on June 16. Its release was delayed multiple times due to director changes, the COVID-19 pandemic, post-production issues, and controversies surrounding Ezra Miller. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, praising its humor, action scenes, and performances but criticizing the third act and visual effects. Despite a production budget of $200–220 million, the film grossed $263 million worldwide, resulting in significant financial losses for Warner Bros. and earning it a place among the biggest box-office failures in history.
