The story begins on May 13, 2000, when Alex Browning, a high school student, boards Flight 180 with his classmates for a senior trip to Paris. Before takeoff, Alex experiences a terrifying premonition that the plane will explode, killing everyone on board. As events from his vision start to unfold, chaos erupts, leading to a confrontation with another student, Carter Horton. This results in both of them, along with several others, being removed from the plane. Shortly after, the plane explodes during takeoff, confirming Alex’s vision.
Following the tragedy, Alex and the other survivors face suspicion from FBI agents. Thirty-nine days later, after attending a memorial service, Tod, one of the survivors, dies in a freak accident. Alex and Clear investigate and learn from a mortician that Death is reclaiming the lives of those who were meant to die in the plane crash. As the survivors try to understand the pattern, they face more deaths in a sequence linked to their original fates.
Alex deduces that Death is following the order of how they were supposed to perish on the plane but struggles to prevent the inevitable. The story unfolds with suspense as the survivors fight to escape their grim destinies.
