**Storyline:**
Micky Ward is an American welterweight boxer from Lowell, Massachusetts. Managed by his mother, Alice Ward, and trained by his older half-brother, Dicky Eklund, Micky becomes a stepping stone for other boxers to defeat on their way up. Dicky, a former boxer known for his match against Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978, has become addicted to crack cocaine. He believes he is being filmed for an HBO documentary about his comeback.
During an undercard fight in Atlantic City, Micky’s scheduled opponent falls ill, and a substitute is found who is 20 pounds heavier—a significant difference in professional boxing. Despite Micky’s concerns, his family agrees to proceed to secure the purse, leading to his defeat. Afterward, Micky retreats and begins a relationship with Charlene Fleming, a former college athlete turned bartender.
Weeks later, Alice arranges another fight for Micky, but he worries it will end the same way. His mother and sisters blame Charlene for his lack of motivation. Micky considers an offer to train in Las Vegas, but Dicky promises to match the offer to keep him within the family. Dicky’s desperate attempt to earn money by impersonating a police officer leads to his arrest. Micky intervenes to stop the police from beating Dicky, resulting in a broken hand and his arrest. While Micky is released, Dicky is sent to jail, and Micky decides to cut ties with him.
