Description: In 1914, an alien race called the Mondoshawans meets with a priest from a secret order at an ancient Egyptian temple. They entrust him with the only weapon capable of defeating a great evil that resurfaces every 5,000 years, promising to return it before the next threat arises. This weapon comprises four classical elements represented by engraved stones and a “fifth element” stored in a sarcophagus.
By the year 2263, the great evil materializes in deep space as a massive flaming entity, annihilating an Earth spaceship as it approaches the planet. Vito Cornelius, the Mondoshawans’ current human contact, informs Earth’s president about the threat and the weapon needed to stop it. However, the Mondoshawans’ spacecraft is attacked and destroyed en route to Earth by the Mangalores, an alien race hired by industrialist Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, who is secretly aiding the great evil.
From the wreckage, a severed hand in metal armor is recovered, and scientists use biotechnology to recreate its original owner—a humanoid woman named Leeloo. Terrified by her unfamiliar surroundings, she escapes and falls into the flying taxi of Korben Dallas, a former special forces officer. Dallas brings her to Cornelius and his apprentice, who identify her as the Fifth Element.
As Leeloo recovers, she reveals that the engraved stones were not on the Mondoshawans’ ship. Instead, the Mondoshawans inform Earth that the stones were given to an alien opera singer, the diva Plavalaguna. Meanwhile, Zorg punishes the Mangalores for failing to retrieve the stones. Earth’s military tasks Dallas with meeting Plavalaguna to recover the stones and confront the impending threat.
