Description: “The Fault in Our Stars” (2014) is a heartfelt story about Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenager residing in Indianapolis, who battles thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. Concerned about her emotional state, her mother encourages her to join a cancer patient support group, where she meets Augustus “Gus” Waters. Gus, who has lost a leg to bone cancer but is in remission, quickly forms a bond with Hazel. The two share their favorite books with each other: Gus gives Hazel “Counter Insurgence,” while Hazel recommends “An Imperial Affliction,” a novel about a girl with cancer that resonates deeply with her.
Later, Gus reveals he has contacted Peter Van Houten, the reclusive author of “An Imperial Affliction,” who now lives in Amsterdam. Van Houten agrees to answer their questions, but only in person. With the help of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Gus secures tickets to Amsterdam for both of them, and after overcoming a medical hurdle, Hazel is cleared for the trip.
In Amsterdam, Gus confesses his love for Hazel during a romantic dinner. However, their meeting with Van Houten turns disastrous when they discover he is a bitter alcoholic. It is revealed that Van Houten’s assistant, Lidewij, had arranged the meeting without his knowledge. Van Houten mocks Hazel and dismisses her questions about the novel’s ending, leaving the two devastated.
To salvage the trip, Lidewij takes them sightseeing, including a visit to the Anne Frank House, where Hazel and Gus share their first kiss. The next day, Gus reveals that his cancer has returned and is now terminal, leaving Hazel heartbroken yet hopeful.
