Storyline:
In rural Arizona, 17-year-old Sean Boswell, an outcast, begins his first day of school. As he leaves after classes, a girl named Cindy compliments his car, sparking jealousy in her boyfriend, Clay, a football player. Clay insults Sean’s car, leading to a confrontation. Sean drives off, but Clay throws a baseball through his rear window. Sean stops, grabs a wrench, and returns to face Clay. Cindy intervenes, suggesting a race where the winner gets to date her. Both agree.
They race in a construction zone, but the competition takes a dangerous turn. Clay crashes into concrete tubing, while Sean’s car flips after plowing through a house. Later, at the police station, Clay and Cindy avoid charges due to their wealthy parents’ connections. Sean, however, faces possible jail time. His frustrated mother sends him to live with his father, a former US Army officer, in Tokyo.
The next morning, Sean wakes up early, finds a school uniform, and heads to the Tokyo metro station. He struggles to locate the school and arrives late. Confused, he meets a teacher who doesn’t speak English and yells at him about his shoes.
