The story begins with a group of stunt drivers in black Honda Civic coupes hijacking a shipment of electronics from a moving truck. Brian O’Conner, an undercover police officer, is tasked with infiltrating Dominic Toretto’s gang, the prime suspects in the robberies. Brian starts by visiting Dominic’s café, where he befriends Dominic’s younger sister, Mia, and attempts to gain the gang’s trust by selling performance equipment. Vince, a member of the gang, becomes jealous, leading to a fight that Dominic eventually breaks up.
Later, Brian attends a street race, where he meets Hector and challenges Dominic to a bet involving his car. Dominic wins the race, showcasing his exceptional driving skills. However, the event is interrupted by a police alert, forcing everyone to flee.
While escaping, Brian helps Dominic avoid being caught. They are then confronted by a group of Chinese bikers led by Johnny Tran, who admires Brian’s car but destroys it using NOS (Nitrous Oxide).
Back at Dominic’s house, tensions rise as Dominic defends Brian, leading to Vince’s frustration and Mia breaking up with Vince. The following day, Brian learns from his boss, Sgt. Tanner, that truckers are growing anxious about the robberies, and the FBI has become involved.
