Description: In 1952, in Haddon Township, New Jersey, a Jewish couple named Mitzi and Burt Fabelman take their young son, Sammy, to see his first movie, Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Sammy is fascinated by a dramatic train crash scene and later receives a model train set for Hanukkah. One night, he crashes the set, and Mitzi, understanding his fascination, lets him recreate the scene using Burt’s 8mm camera. This marks the beginning of Sammy’s passion for filmmaking, often involving his sisters Reggie, Natalie, and Lisa in his projects. The family, along with Burt’s best friend Bennie Loewy, later moves to Phoenix, Arizona, after Burt gets a new job.
As a teenager, Sammy continues making films with his friends in a Boy Scout troop, experimenting with post-production effects and earning a photography badge. During a family camping trip captured on film, Sammy uses the footage to create a home video after Burt suggests it might cheer up Mitzi, who is grieving the loss of her mother. However, tensions arise as Sammy prioritizes his passion for filmmaking, which Burt views as just a hobby.
The family receives a surprise visit from Mitzi’s uncle Boris, a former lion tamer and film worker, who advises Sammy about balancing his art with family responsibilities. While editing the camping trip footage, Sammy discovers subtle signs of a connection between Mitzi and Bennie, which upsets him. After weeks of tension and a heated argument with Mitzi, Sammy reveals the footage to her, and they agree to keep it between them.
