Description: Jessica Chastain delivers an Oscar-worthy performance in *The Eyes of Tammy Faye*, portraying the iconic televangelist with remarkable depth. To embody Tammy Faye’s character fully, Chastain underwent an extensive and demanding makeup process, transforming herself across three distinct phases of Tammy Faye’s life. In an exclusive clip from the biopic’s bonus features, Chastain shares insights into the physical and emotional toll of this transformation, emphasizing the importance of prosthetics in bringing the character to life.
Justin Raleigh, the film’s Emmy-nominated prosthetic makeup designer, describes each phase of Tammy Faye’s life as a “prosthetic milestone.” The process involved adding cheek pieces, enhancing the chin, and creating realistic wrinkles and neck sections. Cherry Jones, who plays Tammy Faye’s mother in the film, highlights the immense physical burden of the role, with Chastain encased in layers of latex, wigs, and other prosthetics.
Chastain’s transformation was meticulously crafted, with Raleigh using 3D modeling and traditional casting techniques to achieve the desired look. The prosthetics, which took nearly two and a half hours to apply, included cheek appliances to widen her face and a chin prosthetic to fill in the dimple. This attention to detail allowed Chastain to fully immerse herself in the role, capturing the essence of Tammy Faye’s life and struggles.
