The story follows Barney Ross and his elite team of mercenaries, known as The Expendables, which includes skilled members like Lee Christmas, Yin Yang, Hale Caesar, Toll Road, Gunner Jensen, and Billy the Kid, the newest recruit. Their mission begins in Nepal, where they rescue Dr. Zhou and fellow mercenary Trench, Ross’s rival. Later, back in New Orleans, Billy plans to retire and settle down with his girlfriend, Sophia.
However, Ross is compelled by CIA operative Mr. Church to undertake a mission in Albania, where they must retrieve an item from a crashed plane. Accompanied by technical expert Maggie Chan, the team successfully retrieves the item but is ambushed by international criminal Jean Vilain and his mercenary group, the Sangs. Vilain captures Billy and demands the item in exchange for his life. Although the team complies, Vilain brutally kills Billy and escapes with the item.
Maggie reveals that the item contains critical information about five tons of plutonium left in a Soviet mine after the Cold War. Determined to avenge Billy, the team tracks Vilain to Bulgaria, where they face another deadly ambush. Just as they run out of ammunition, Ross’s old friend Booker arrives to save them, neutralizing the threat and reigniting their fight against Vilain.
