Robert McCall, a former Marine and DIA operative portrayed by Denzel Washington, now lives in a diverse apartment complex in Roxbury, Boston. Working as a Lyft driver, he dedicates his time to helping those in need, aided by his close friend and former CIA colleague, Susan Plummer. McCall embarks on a mission to Istanbul to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a bookstore owner, Grace Braelick, after she is taken by her abusive Turkish father.
Additionally, McCall assists Sam Rubinstein, an elderly Holocaust survivor searching for a painting of his sister, who was separated from him during the Nazi regime. When the apartment complex’s courtyard is vandalized, McCall enlists the help of Miles Whittaker, a young resident with artistic talent and a troubled past, to restore the area.
Meanwhile, Susan and DIA officer Dave York, McCall’s former partner, investigate a murder-suicide in Brussels. Tragically, Susan is killed in what appears to be a robbery, but McCall suspects foul play. He uncovers that her death is linked to the staged murder-suicide case and begins a personal investigation to uncover the truth.
In Washington, D.C., McCall confronts York about his findings and later rescues Miles from a local gang. As a gesture of trust, McCall offers to pay Miles to repaint his kitchen on the condition that he reads Ta-Nehisi Coates’ *Between the World and Me*.
