**Storyline:**
During the final days of the Italian Campaign in World War II, Hana, a French-Canadian nurse serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, receives permission from her unit to move into a bombed-out Italian monastery. There, she cares for a critically burned, dying man who speaks English but cannot recall his identity. The patient’s only possession is a copy of Herodotus’ *Histories*, filled with notes, pictures, and mementos.
Soon, they are joined by Kip, a Sikh sapper in the British Army tasked with clearing mines and unexploded bombs in the area, including the monastery. David Caravaggio, a Canadian Intelligence Corps operative missing his thumbs due to torture during a German interrogation, also arrives. As Caravaggio questions the patient, the man begins to reveal his past through a series of flashbacks.
The patient recounts his experiences in the late 1930s as a Hungarian cartographer, Count László de Almásy, who was mapping the Sahara Desert near the Egyptian-Libyan border as part of a Royal Geographical Society expedition. He worked alongside his friend, Peter Madox, and was later joined by a British couple, Geoffrey and Katharine Clifton, who contributed to the aerial survey efforts.
During their explorations, Almásy and the team discover the Cave of Swimmers, an ancient site with cave paintings in the Gilf Kebir. While documenting their findings, Almásy falls in love with Katharine, detailing his feelings in notes tucked into his book. Katharine discovers these notes when Almásy asks her to paste two of her watercolor paintings into the book.
This poignant tale intertwines love, loss, and identity against the backdrop of war and discovery.
