Description: The Emoji Movie (2017) is an animated film that takes place in Textopolis, a digital city inside a teenager’s smartphone. The protagonist, Gene, is an emoji capable of making multiple expressions, unlike his parents, Mel and Mary, who can only express the “meh” emotion. When Gene is chosen to represent Alex, the phone’s owner, in a text message, he panics and creates chaos in the text center. Smiler, the leader of the text center, labels Gene as a malfunction and orders his deletion.
With the help of Hi-5, a faded emoji seeking to regain fame, Gene embarks on a journey to find a hacker who can fix him. Along the way, they meet Jailbreak, a hacker emoji who dreams of living in the cloud. The trio faces numerous challenges as they navigate through various apps, including Candy Crush and Just Dance, while evading Smiler’s relentless bots.
As the story unfolds, Gene discovers that his father, Mel, is also a malfunction, which explains his unique ability. Jailbreak, revealed to be a princess emoji, encourages Gene to embrace his true self rather than trying to change. Their bond deepens, and they manage to rescue Hi-5 from the trash bin. Finally, they reach the cloud, where Jailbreak prepares to reprogram Gene, though he begins to question whether altering himself is the right choice.
The film explores themes of self-acceptance, identity, and the value of being different in a world that often demands conformity.
