However, when Merrick recites the 23rd Psalm, showing his ability to read and memorize, Carr Gomm allows him to stay. Over time, Merrick builds a life within the hospital, engaging in conversations with Treves and constructing a detailed model of a nearby cathedral.
Merrick’s humanity shines through as he forms connections with those around him. During a visit to Treves’ home, Merrick shares a photo of his mother, expressing his hope that she would be proud to see him surrounded by kind and supportive friends. His world expands further when he meets actress Madge Kendal, who introduces him to the works of Shakespeare. The film beautifully captures Merrick’s resilience and the compassion of those who come to see him as more than his appearance. The Elephant Man is a poignant exploration of dignity, kindness, and the power of human connection.
