Description: “The Eight Hundred” is a 2020 Chinese historical war film directed and co-written by Guan Hu. Starring Huang Zhizhong, Oho Ou, Jiang Wu, Zhang Yi, Wang Qianyuan, Du Chun, Vision Wei, Li Chen, Yu Haoming, Tang Yixin, and Zheng Kai, the movie depicts the Defense of Sihang Warehouse in 1937 during the Battle of Shanghai and the Second Sino-Japanese War.
Originally planned for release in July 2019, the film premiered nationwide on August 21, 2020. It achieved both critical acclaim and commercial success, earning $461 million globally. Remarkably, it became the highest-grossing film of 2020, marking the first time since 2007 that the top-grossing film of the year earned less than $1 billion. It was also the first instance in history where a non-Hollywood production held this title. Its success was largely driven by its strong performance in China, where theaters remained open due to the country’s effective management of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The story unfolds during the early days of the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, as the Imperial Japanese Army invades Shanghai in what became known as the Battle of Shanghai. After three months of intense fighting and heavy losses, the Chinese army was forced to retreat to avoid encirclement. Lieutenant Colonel Xie Jinyuan of the 524th Regiment led 452 soldiers in a daring defense of Sihang Warehouse against the 20,000-strong 3rd Imperial Japanese Division. This heroic last stand was ordered by Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek to boost Chinese morale following the fall of Beijing and Shanghai and to garner support from the Allies, who observed the battle from the International Settlement across Suzhou Creek.
