Description: “The Edge of Seventeen,” released in 2016, follows the life of Nadine Franklin, a seventeen-year-old high school junior living in the suburbs of Portland. Nadine struggles with turbulent relationships with her popular older brother, Darian, and her image-conscious mother, Mona. She feels closest to her late father, Tom, who passed away from a heart attack when she was thirteen. Since his death, her best friend Krista has been her only source of support.
One night, Nadine and Krista get drunk at Nadine’s house while Darian hosts a pool party. Nadine falls asleep, and Krista ends up downstairs interacting with Darian. The next morning, Nadine discovers Krista in bed with Darian, which severely strains their friendship. At school, Darian and Krista express mutual enjoyment of their time together, leaving Nadine feeling isolated. She turns to her classmate Erwin Kim, who has feelings for her, though Nadine is more interested in an older student, Nick Mossman.
Darian invites Krista to a house party, where Krista insists Nadine join. However, Krista spends time socializing with others, leaving Nadine feeling left out. After failing to connect with anyone, Nadine leaves the party. She later invites Erwin to an amusement park, where she rejects his attempt to kiss her. Despite this, they end the night on good terms and become close friends.
At school, Krista confronts Nadine for ignoring her, and Nadine harshly tells her that Darian will eventually lose interest and leave her. Krista reveals that Darian has asked her to be his girlfriend and to prom, further upsetting Nadine. Feeling insecure, Nadine forces Krista to choose between her and Darian. When Krista refuses to choose, Nadine angrily ends their friendship.”
