Description: Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) works as a bartender in a Brooklyn neighborhood bar. Years ago, Marvin Stipler (James Gandolfini) handed over ownership of the bar to Chechen mobsters, and now it operates as a ‘drop’ for illegal money. Marv mocks Bob and other patrons for marking the 10th anniversary of the death of a man named Richie Whelan.
While heading home, Bob discovers a severely injured pit bull puppy abandoned in a trash bin in front of a house. He rescues the dog and meets Nadia (Noomi Rapace), a resident of the house, who agrees to care for the puppy until Bob decides whether to adopt him.
When the bar is robbed by two masked gunmen, Marv is upset that Bob informed Detective Torres (John Ortiz) about one of the robbers wearing a broken watch. Torres, who has noticed Bob at the church they both attend, is curious about Bob’s hesitation to take Holy Communion. Later, Chovka (Michael Aronov), a Chechen thug, threatens Marv and Bob, demanding they recover the stolen money. Marv meets with one of the robbers, Fitz (James Frecheville), and reveals he orchestrated the robbery. Conversations with his sister, Dottie (Ann Dowd), suggest Marv’s motive is to continue funding his father’s life support.
Bob decides to keep the dog and names him Rocco, bonding with Nadia, who agrees to look after Rocco when Bob is at the bar. Nadia has scars on her neck, which she admits are self-inflicted from a past drug addiction. While walking Rocco in a park, Bob encounters Eric Deeds (Matthias Schoenaerts), who claims to be the dog’s original owner and admits to mistreating and abandoning him. Deeds threatens to involve the police if Rocco is not returned.
