Description: “The Counselor,” a 2013 film, follows a Texas-based lawyer referred to as “The Counselor” as he navigates a dangerous world of crime and deceit. The story begins with the lawyer and his girlfriend, Laura, sharing an intimate moment. Meanwhile, in Mexico, cocaine is smuggled across the U.S. border, hidden in a sewage truck, and stored at a treatment plant.
The Counselor travels to Amsterdam to buy an engagement ring for Laura. There, he engages in a deep conversation with a diamond dealer, discussing topics ranging from the diamond trade to philosophical reflections on Judaism. Upon returning to Texas, he attends a party hosted by Reiner and his girlfriend, Malkina. During the gathering, Reiner describes a brutal execution device called “the bolito,” which strangles and decapitates its victims. Later, The Counselor proposes to Laura, and she accepts.
The Counselor meets with Westray, a business associate of Reiner’s, to invest in an upcoming drug deal. Despite Westray’s warnings about the ruthless nature of Mexican cartels, The Counselor remains confident. He also helps a client, Ruth, by bailing out her son, who was arrested for speeding. In a bizarre twist, Reiner later shares a disturbing story about Malkina involving his Ferrari California.
The film delves into themes of greed, betrayal, and the consequences of entering a world of crime.
