**Storyline:**
A series of unusual events related to Earth’s magnetic field lead a team of scientists, including geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes, Dr. Serge Leveque, and Dr. Conrad Zimsky, to discover that the Earth’s molten core has stopped rotating. Without intervention, the magnetic field will collapse within months, exposing the planet to deadly solar radiation. The U.S. government initiates a secret mission to build a vessel capable of drilling to the core and detonating nuclear weapons to restart its rotation.
The team relies on Dr. Ed “Braz” Brazzelton’s invention of “Unobtainium,” a material that can withstand extreme core pressures and convert them into energy. They also use a high-speed laser drilling system. Commander Robert Iverson and Major Rebecca “Beck” Childs are tasked with piloting the multi-compartment vessel, Virgil, while computer hacker Theodore Donald “Rat” Finch is recruited to prevent news of the impending disaster from leaking online.
Virgil is launched through the Marianas Trench and successfully penetrates Earth’s crust. However, during the descent, the vessel accidentally drills through a massive geode, damaging the lasers. As the team works to free the ship from crystalline structures, magma floods the geode, resulting in Iverson’s fatal injury. The remaining crew continues the mission, eventually encountering a field of enormous diamond formations. One of these breaches the compartment housing the nuclear detonation timers, forcing Leveque to sacrifice himself to ensure the team retains the charges and launch codes.
Upon reaching the molten core, the team discovers it is less dense than expected, complicating their plan to restart its rotation.
