The movie begins with footage from a press conference in New York, held five days before the concerts at Allen Klein’s ABKCO offices. During the event, George Harrison and Ravi Shankar discuss the upcoming shows. When a reporter asks Harrison why he chose to address this particular global issue, he simply responds, “Because I was asked by a friend if I could help—that’s all.”
The scene then transitions to Madison Square Garden, where musicians and crew are preparing for the first performance. In a voiceover, Harrison explains how the project came to fruition. Once the concert begins, Harrison takes the stage alone and addresses the audience, humorously remarking, “We’ve got a good show lined up—well, I hope so anyway,” hinting at the event’s quick organization.
Harrison introduces the first group of musicians, led by Ravi Shankar, who attempts to explain the nuances of Indian classical music to the audience while emphasizing the purpose of this special benefit concert. Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan begin tuning their instruments, but after just 30 seconds, the audience erupts in applause. Shankar responds with a smile, “Thank you, if you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more.” The musicians then perform a fifteen-minute dhun.

He is accompanied by a large band, including drummers Ringo Starr and Jim Keltner, pianist Leon Russell, organist Billy Preston, bassist Klaus Voormann, lead guitarists Eric Clapton and Jesse Ed Davis, the members of Badfinger on rhythm guitars and tambourine, a six-piece horn section, and a choir of backing vocalists, some of whom also play percussion.
