**Storyline:**
During a recession, the publicly-held shipbuilding corporation Global Transportation Systems (GTX) undergoes significant downsizing, leading to the dismissal of numerous employees, including Bobby Walker. Walker, a high-earning corporate professional with a family, struggles as he loses his job. Despite receiving outplacement services from GTX, he fails to secure new employment and gradually loses his luxurious lifestyle, including his country club membership and Porsche. Eventually, he is forced to sell his expensive house and move his family in with his parents. Desperate for work, Walker takes a manual labor job under his brother-in-law, Jack Dolan, renovating a home.
Meanwhile, Gene McClary, GTX’s Executive Vice President, challenges the company’s CEO, James Salinger, over the ethics of laying off employees while investing in new corporate headquarters. Salinger, McClary’s longtime friend and former college roommate, defends the strategy, claiming it is necessary to boost profits, raise the stock price, and prevent a hostile takeover. Later, another round of layoffs occurs, and Phil Woodward, a senior manager who rose from the factory floor to the corporate office over 30 years, is also terminated. When McClary demands Woodward’s reinstatement, he discovers he is being fired as well. After leaving his wife, McClary moves in with Sally Wilcox, the senior HR manager and his mistress.
Woodward’s life spirals out of control as he struggles to find new employment, repeatedly told he is too old to start a new career or perform demanding jobs.
