Description: The Colour of Paradise (1999) tells the story of Mohammad, a blind boy who is released from his special school in Tehran for summer vacation. His father, Hashem, ashamed of his son’s blindness, arrives late to pick him up and tries to persuade the headmaster to keep Mohammad over the summer. When the headmaster refuses, Hashem reluctantly takes him home.
Hashem, a widower, plans to remarry and seeks the approval of the bride’s family, hiding Mohammad’s blindness out of fear they will see it as a bad omen. Meanwhile, Mohammad joyfully explores the natural beauty of his village with his sisters, connecting with nature through touch and sound. He attends the local school, where his ability to read Braille amazes the children and the teacher.
As Hashem’s fears grow, he leaves Mohammad with a blind carpenter to apprentice him. During this time, Mohammad expresses his longing to see God, questioning why he was made blind if God loves the blind more. His words deeply affect the carpenter, who is also blind and reflects on the boy’s profound thoughts.
The film beautifully captures Mohammad’s unique perspective on the world, his resilience, and his search for meaning, while highlighting the struggles and emotional complexities of his family.
