Storyline:
Evan Treborn and his friends, Lenny, Kayleigh, and her brother Tommy Miller, endured significant psychological traumas during their childhood, often causing Evan to black out. These traumas include being forced into child pornography by Kayleigh and Tommy’s father, George Miller; witnessing his institutionalized father, Jason Treborn, nearly strangle him before being killed by guards; accidentally causing the death of a mother and her child while playing with dynamite; and seeing his dog burned alive by Tommy.
Years later, Evan discovers that reading his childhood journals allows him to travel back in time and change events from his past. These experiences explain his frequent blackouts as a child, as they were moments when his adult consciousness took over. However, altering the past leads to unintended consequences that drastically reshape his present life. For example, his actions result in alternate futures where he becomes a fraternity member, a convicted murderer, or a quadruple amputee. Over time, Evan realizes that despite his good intentions, his time-traveling has devastating effects on himself and his friends.
As the new memories from these alternate timelines overwhelm him, Evan begins to suffer from severe brain damage and nosebleeds. He eventually concludes that he and his friends will never have a positive future if he continues to interfere with the past. In a final attempt to fix things, Evan travels back to the day he first met Kayleigh and deliberately upsets her, ensuring she and Tommy move away with their mother after their parents’ divorce.
This decision brings an end to his time-traveling, allowing everyone to live separate lives free from the tragedies of their shared past.
