**Plot Summary:**
In 2009, Cecil Gaines, an elderly man, recalls his life story while waiting at the White House to meet the newly inaugurated president. Born and raised on a cotton plantation in Macon, Georgia, Cecil’s life takes a tragic turn in 1926 when, at the age of seven, the plantation owner assaults his mother, and his father is killed for confronting the perpetrator. Taken in by the estate’s caretaker, Cecil is trained as a house servant.

At 18, in 1937, Cecil leaves the plantation. Facing hunger, he breaks into a hotel pastry shop, where the head servant, Maynard, takes him under his wing. Maynard teaches Cecil advanced serving and interpersonal skills, eventually recommending him for a position at a Washington, D.C. hotel. There, Cecil meets Gloria, whom he marries, and they have two sons, Louis and Charlie.

In 1957, Cecil is hired by the White House during Dwight D. Eisenhower’s administration. Working alongside colleagues Freddie Fallows, Carter Wilson, and James Holloway, Cecil witnesses pivotal moments in history, including Eisenhower’s decision to enforce school desegregation in Little Rock, Arkansas. Meanwhile, Louis, Cecil’s elder son, attends Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and becomes involved in the civil rights movement. Participating in nonviolent sit-ins and protests, Louis is arrested, causing tension within the family. Gloria, feeling neglected, turns to alcoholism.

In 1961, Louis joins a freedom ride to Birmingham, Alabama, where he is attacked by the Ku Klux Klan. His activism continues, including participation in the 1963 Birmingham Children’s Crusade, a key event that inspires President John F. Kennedy to propose the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After Kennedy’s assassination, his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, signs the legislation into law. As a heartfelt gesture, Jackie Kennedy gifts Cecil one of the late president’s neckties.

The Butler portrays Cecil’s life as a witness to history, exploring themes of family, sacrifice, and the struggle for civil rights.
