The movie features a few striking scenes of CGI-generated chaos, particularly after the discovery of a massive crack in the North Sea’s floor. These moments, though limited, add tension. The story also includes gripping sequences centered around submarine expert Sofia (Kristine Kujath Thorp) and her efforts to reunite with her selfless love interest, Stian (Henrik Bjelland), an oil rig worker who risks his life to save others. However, the characters’ predictable actions prevent the film from standing out beyond its niche appeal.
*The Burning Sea* opens and closes with a preachy yet restrained monologue by oil rig representative William Lie (Bjørn Floberg), who reflects on Norway’s complex history with offshore drilling. While Lie expresses regret, he avoids assigning blame, emphasizing his role as a company man and emergency manager. He reminds Sofia and her colleague Arthur (Rolf Kristian Larsen) of their non-disclosure agreements, reinforcing the film’s underlying themes of responsibility and corporate loyalty.
