Description: In 1811, during the French occupation of Germany, brothers Wilhelm (Will) and Jakob (Jake) Grimm are renowned monster-hunters. Their relationship is strained due to Jake’s naive childhood mistake of trading their family cow for “magic beans” instead of selling it for money to buy medicine for their sick sister, which led to her death. Arriving in Karlstadt, they are hired to eliminate a witch’s ghost, which they supposedly defeat in an elaborate battle. However, the Grimms are actually con artists who use Jake’s knowledge of local legends to fabricate monsters and charge townspeople for their fake services.
While celebrating at an inn, the brothers are captured by an Italian torturer named Cavaldi and brought to French General Delatombe. In exchange for amnesty for their crimes, Delatombe tasks them with solving the mystery of disappearing girls in Marbaden, suspecting that charlatans like the Grimms are behind it.
In Marbaden, a huntress named Angelika, whose younger sisters were among the first to vanish, leads the brothers, Cavaldi, and his men to a tower in the forest. She shares her father’s story of the Thuringian Queen: long ago, a Christian king built a city in the forest, slaughtering the pagan locals. When the bubonic plague struck, the vain queen sealed herself in the tower, only to contract the plague and lose her beauty.
Jake’s horse becomes cursed by a mysterious huntsman and brutally swallows a girl named Elsie whole. Pursuing the horse into the forest, the group is attacked by a giant wolf and the forest itself, resulting in the deaths of Cavaldi’s men. Cavaldi takes Angelika and the Grimms to Delatombe, who orders their execution. Desperate, the brothers convince Delatombe that the forest’s magic is actually the work of German rebels.
The Brothers Grimm (2005) is a tale of deception, adventure, and the brothers’ complicated relationship as they navigate a world of myths and danger.
