Orphaned at a young age, the Brothers Bloom began their journey as con artists in their childhood. Stephen, the older brother, devised intricate schemes, while Bloom, the younger one, built trust with their targets. Their first con was crafted by Stephen to encourage Bloom to interact with girls.
Twenty-five years later, the brothers had become the world’s most skilled con men, joined by Bang Bang, a silent Japanese explosives expert. Despite their success, Bloom grew weary of merely playing roles in Stephen’s elaborate plans. Craving an authentic, “unwritten life,” he left the con world and settled in Montenegro. Three months later, Stephen tracked him down and persuaded Bloom to join one final scheme. Reluctantly, Bloom agreed.
Their target was Penelope Stamp, a wealthy and socially isolated heiress living in a New Jersey mansion. Disguised as antique dealers, the brothers set their plan in motion. Bloom initiated contact by intentionally colliding his bicycle with Penelope’s sports car. As they got to know each other, Penelope revealed her lonely life and eclectic hobbies, such as juggling and kung fu. Sensing her desire for adventure, Bloom hinted at his upcoming journey to Europe, which prompted Penelope to join them on their voyage to Greece.
While onboard, the con continued when Melville, a Belgian accomplice hired by Stephen, informed Penelope that the brothers were antique smugglers seeking her assistance with a job in Prague. Thrilled by the prospect of becoming a smuggler, Penelope enthusiastically convinced the brothers to proceed, unaware that this was all part of the scheme. Meanwhile, Bloom and Penelope began to develop feelings for each other, but Stephen cautioned Bloom that falling in love with their target could jeopardize the con.
