Description: In 1968, Michael prepares for Harold’s birthday party at his apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. His friend Donald arrives early due to a canceled psychiatrist appointment, leading Michael to reflect on his aging and debt-ridden life. Alan, Michael’s former Georgetown roommate, calls in distress, claiming he has something urgent to discuss. Michael invites Alan to the party but warns his guests that Alan is heterosexual and unaware of Michael’s homosexuality.
As the evening progresses, Emory arrives with Hank and Larry, whose relationship is strained. Bernard joins the party with books for Donald. Alan later informs Michael he won’t attend the party but will meet him the next day for lunch. Despite this, Alan shows up unexpectedly and interacts awkwardly with the guests, bonding with Hank, whom he mistakenly believes is straight. Michael tries to discuss Alan’s urgent matter, but Alan avoids the topic.
A hustler named “Cowboy” arrives early, confusing Michael for Harold and kissing him, which unsettles Alan. Emory accuses Alan of being closeted, leading to a physical altercation. Harold arrives, high on marijuana, and embraces Cowboy’s flamboyance. Michael relapses into drinking and smoking, leading to a heated exchange with Harold. As the party continues, a thunderstorm forces everyone indoors.
