**Storyline:**
In December 1976, Arthur Lewis, a financially struggling NASA engineer, and his wife Norma find a mysterious package on their doorstep. Inside is a wooden box with a large red button. Soon after, a disfigured man named Mr. Steward arrives to explain the box’s purpose. He tells Norma that if she presses the button, she will receive $1 million, but someone she doesn’t know will die. As a token of goodwill, he leaves $100 for merely hearing his offer.
Norma and Arthur debate the moral dilemma, especially after learning their son Walter’s private school will no longer offer a tuition discount. Despite opening the box and finding it seemingly empty, they remain conflicted. The next morning, Arthur confirms the $100 is real. After further discussion, Norma impulsively presses the button, whispering, “It’s just a box.”
Soon after, a murder occurs, and the gunman escapes with a briefcase. Mr. Steward returns to deliver the $1 million, confirming someone died as a result of their action. He also reveals the same offer will be presented to someone else. Arthur tries to return the money, but Steward refuses, stating, “the button has been pressed.”
The police investigate the murder as a domestic homicide, revealing the victim’s husband is Arthur’s colleague. Meanwhile, NASA officials discuss the mysterious disappearance of Arlington Steward, who had allegedly been killed by lightning shortly after NASA received the first photo from the Viking 1 Mars lander in July 1976.
